What Are The Hair Transplant Surgery Steps?
How is hair transplant done? Everyone has questions about the surgery itself.
- HAIRLINE DESIGN AND CONSULTATION
- SHAVING & PREPARATION
- LOCAL ANESTHESIA
- GRAFTING HAIR
- OPENING OF CHANNELS FOR FUE TECHNIQUE (NOT FOR DHI)
- IMPLANTATION OF GRAFTS
- POST SURGERY

HAIRLINE DESIGN AND CONSULTATION
During the assessment, the doctor discusses how the operation will proceed, how many hair grafts they can gather, what to assume from the procedure, and designs the new hairline. The donor hair qualities are also assessed at this stage.
SHAVING & PREPARATION
Before injecting local anesthetic, the back side of the head gets trimmed to 1 to 2 mm in length. The shaving is normally like a thick line at the rear of the hair, and the hair won’t be totally cut. It is crucial to have the donor hair follicles the same length for exact grafting.
In DHI and FUE techniques, this strip of shaved hair gets removed one by one with specific pen equipment.
In the FUT technique, that strip of hair is surgically removed, and the opening region is subsequently sutured with stitches following grafting.
LOCAL ANESTHESIA
Once the patient is in the surgery room, surgery starts with local anesthetic on donor and recipient sites. Further local anesthetic is given into the inner corners of the brows to relieve the headache during the recovery phase.
GRAFTING HAIR
While hair grafting, grafts are harvested using a micro-motor with a steel hollowed pipe diameter of 0.5 to 1.0 mm. The instrument penetrates the skin by spinning and cutting it. Not only is the hair bulb extracted, but the complete follicular unit including surrounding tissue is also removed.
Graft Preservation
Hair grafts are cleansed and placed in laboratory dishes where they must remain between 0-4 degrees cold. They are sorted into different areas, varying from one-haired grafts to four-haired grafts.
OPENING OF CHANNELS FOR FUE TECHNIQUE (NOT FOR DHI)
The crew starts producing micro incisions with a sapphire blade in the recipient region, opening the channels that will hold the extracted hair follicles. These are not deep and are relatively modest in diameter.
The angle and the orientation of these channels are crucial. When the team opens these channels at the proper angle and in the right direction, the effect will be natural and unobtrusive. It’s vital to replicate the natural direction and angle of the hair.
IMPLANTATION OF GRAFTS
Once the perforation of the channels is done, the grafts are placed one by one in FUE technique.
POST SURGERY
Following the hair transplant procedure, you will be able to walk, be alert and do anything. However, you may feel weary, disoriented and have a small headache. We propose you go right home – or in the hotel – eat something and rest as much as possible. It’s totally natural to feel dizzy and exhausted. Just take some relaxation, you deserve it!
