What is FUE Hair Transplant Technique?

To perform a follicular unit excision (FUE) hair transplant, individual follicular units(natural hair clusters with one to four hairs each)are removed from the back of the head, occasionally from the beard, and other body parts. These units are then usually transplanted back into the balding areas of the scalp or other body parts as desired. Micropuncts ranging in size from 0.7 to 1.2 mm are used in FUE to extract these follicular units. There are three different types of micro-punches: robotic, motorized, and manual.

The word FUE was once used to refer to “follicular unit extraction,” but it has subsequently evolved to more accurately refer to “follicular unit excision” in order to reflect the really surgical judgment and expertise needed to harvest FUE grafts.

Avoid the Black Market

Whatever approach the surgeon decides on, it is important that the procedure be carried out by a physician who is both legally and ethically obligated to carry out the harvesting procedure. This is in contrast to the troubling trend of unlicensed technicians (also known as the “black market”) being given this responsibility nowadays. Since extracting follicular units requires a delicate touch, endurance, and judgment, the expertise of the hair transplant surgeon really depends on their talent and experience.

Understanding the Difference Between FUE and FUT

Hair transplant techniques used in hair transplant surgery include FUE and FUT. We have already discussed FUE.
In FUT hair is extracted from the scalp using the older, conventional method known as linear strip excision (LSE) or follicular unit transplantation (FUT). Follicle unit transplantation, or FUT for short, is the process of harvesting a linear strip of tissue, including skin and hair follicles, and then shutting the donor incision with staples or sutures. The strip of tissue must then be divided into individual grafts by trained technicians in order to be transplanted. The recipient region of the scalp is then implanted with these individual grafts. In contrast to FUE, FUT leaves a linear scar.

Advantages of FUE Hair Transplantation

A patient should be informed that FUE has a number of unique benefits.
– The scar is not linear like FUT, despite the fact that FUE is not scarless, A patient doesn’t have to worry about a linear scar..
– Recovery from FUE is quicker than that from FUT.
– Several patients have experienced reduced discomfort after surgery after FUE as opposed to FUT.
– In areas other than the scalp, such as the beard, chest, etc., where FUT would not be permitted because of obvious linear scarring, FUE enables harvesting.

FUE Side effects

– Harvesting too much in the donor area or too much outside the SDA (safe donor area) can be two of the biggest hazards.
– Minor problems including scalp cysts and mild infections are among the side effects of FUE.
In the end, if you have done your research and selected a skilled surgeon, the risks and adverse effects should be few and transient.

Ideal Candidates for FUE Hair Transplants

Choosing the right candidate for FUE hair transplant involves a thorough evaluation. Factors like donor hair density, scalp flexibility, and overall health are crucial. The Norwood Scale helps assess hair loss progression. A detailed medical history and scalp examination are essential to identify potential risks and ensure suitability. Realistic expectations are key; FUE can improve hair density but may not completely reverse baldness. Age, genetics, and lifestyle factors all play a role in determining candidacy. Ideal candidates have sufficient donor hair, stable hair loss patterns, and a healthy lifestyle. A thorough evaluation by a qualified surgeon is crucial to ensure the best possible outcomes and patient satisfaction.

FUE Hair Transplant Process Steps

The FUE technique differs from one surgeon to the next in terms of personnel, anesthetic, instruments, setup, execution, and sequencing.

  • Defining the Donor and Recipient Regions
The first stage in any hair transplant surgery is to delineate the donor and recipient regions, including the hairline design, after discussing the aims of the transplant with the patient. The next step is to make sure the patient is happy with the suggested locations for transplant. For instance, if the patient wishes to have a transplant in the crown but the surgeon only does one in the hairline, that would not be a desirable scenario.
  • How to Give Anaesthesia
In order to numb the scalp in preparation for the treatment, the patient is then given Local anesthetic.
  • Setting Up Recipient Locations
When making recipient sites (the slits into which the grafts will eventually be put), the surgeon usually constructs those sites after harvesting a few grafts from the donor region to ensure that the grafts would fit the recipient sites.
It should be noted that not all surgeons will choose to create the recipient sites prior to harvesting the donor grafts.
  • Graft Harvesting
The amount of donor hair grafts for harvesting will be planned by the surgeon based on the number of recipient sites created. Once more, some surgeons would rather prepare recipient sites using the collected amount of grafts after harvesting the grafts.
  • The Position of Grafts
Lastly, donor hair grafts are inserted into the recipient areas, usually by the skilled personnel. In order to have the ideal aesthetic appearance for one’s hair, hair grafts must be positioned at the proper angles and orientations. It takes a great deal of skill and accuracy to complete this stage.

Recovery from FUE

As was previously indicated, FUE healing is often less unpleasant and occurs more quickly. The donor region is often shaved during FUE procedures. Tiny scabs will develop in the donor and recipient locations and stay there until they are carefully wiped off, generally one to two weeks later, though various surgeons have different guidelines. After the scabs are removed, the majority of patients revert to their “invisible” condition, where they wait for their newly transplanted hair to grow over time as the hair grafts fall off (but the root remains). Hairs grow roughly 1 cm per month, so it takes at least a few months before the entire effect is seen, and it often takes a year or more.
Different surgeons have different rules about the use of postoperative bandages, sprays, etc., as well as other things like returning to exercise, water exposure, etc. It is crucial to follow the instructions provided by the surgeon you choose rather than any information you may find on other websites you browse or visit.

Choosing the Appropriate Surgeon

The secret to a good result is selecting the appropriate surgeon. When a surgeon is willing to inform you that a transplant is not a good option for you, even when that is the fact, that surgeon is practicing ethical medicine. A surgeon’s qualifications and expertise should be your primary considerations, coupled with referrals and word-of-mouth, as well as a comparison of the before and after photos. In the end, the surgeon you choose need to have taken the time to discuss with you a safe and sensible plan and approach that may include medication in addition to surgery to assist stabilize and slow the course of hair loss.
